Carbon zero: the green battle of Waterloo
New action plan to fight climate change, making our area carbon net zero by 2030
Launch of strategy and action plan
From SoWN, WeAreWaterloo and South Bank Business Improvement Districts, and Lambeth Council
All residents and businesses are being invited to an event crucial to the area’s future on Wednesday 24 May, launching a new plan to cut our area’s carbon emissions to net zero by 2030. SoWN’s environment group originated and promoted the idea which led to the council and BIDs commissioning sustainability experts Anthesis. Local organisations and people of all ages have also been involved - a real team effort on an issue which matters so much to everyone.
The event will be held from 4.30-6pm in St John’s Church - itself a standout example of a heritage retrofit project. It’ll be introduced by Cllr Claire Holland (Leader, Lambeth Council), Catherine Barber (Greater London Authority Director of Environment and Energy) and Canon Giles Goddard (Vicar, St John’s and Chair, SoWN).
There will be an artistic performance and panel discussion on Commerce, culture and community: achieving net zero by 2030 - a chance to hear from local business, cultural and residential communities on working together to achieve the strategy - then until 7.30pm there will be a reception with refreshments.

The troops now arriving at platform 16…
For millions of viewers around the world, one of the first sights of the coronation was the arrival of 5,000 armed forces personnel at Waterloo Station. They processed along York Road (click here to view a clip from Sky News) and across Westminster Bridge to take their place in the parade leading King Charles and Queen Camilla from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey.
Meanwhile at St John’s Waterloo, church regulars and residents gathered to watch the coronation together and enjoy celebratory cakes and drinks. The event was hosted by the church with Lambeth Estate Residents’ Association.
One of the church members even made a throne, providing a fun opportunity for locals to share the experience of being crowned. Waterloo’s undoubted top dog was King Alfie the Schnauzer.
Celebrations continue on coronation holiday Monday
A reminder that there are more local coronation celebrations tomorrow:
11am-5pm party at Waterloo Action Centre, including singing nostalgia, dancing, talks and short films about local history and a sale of goods made at WAC.
12-4pm community celebration at Millennium Green, with a jerk food lunch, cakes, drinks, live performances, circus skills, pet show and a food drive for Waterloo Foodbank. Hosted by Oasis Hub Waterloo with other local organisations.
12-4pm UNBOSI Marble Awareness Show at Emma Cons Gardens with giant marble runs, organised by the Emma Cons Gardens Steering Group.

From 18 Blackfriars Road Engagement Team and Architects’ Journal
Before submitting its planning application in “late spring”, developer Hines is holding a final public consultation on its plans for 18 Blackfriars Road (the block between Christ Church garden, Blackfriars Road, Stamford Street and Paris Garden which has been empty since 2016). New plans designed by architects Foster + Partners were revealed last year, including a roughly 200 metre tall office tower alongside two smaller residential blocks, set around a central plaza.
There will be two sessions, both at London Nautical School, 61 Stamford Street:
Thursday 18 May, 4-8pm, community evening
Saturday 20 May, 10am-1pm, community fun day
